PRESS RELEASE. FINAL RESULTS.

September 17 was the last working day for autumn furniture exhibitions, held in Sokolniki Culture & Exhibition Centre: ARTFURNITURE/ARFEX-2004, the 4th International exhibition of furniture art, Kitexpo-2004, the 3rd International specialized exhibition of furniture for kitchen and dining-rooms, built-in and other household appliances, and OFEXPO + ORGEXPO – 2004, the 2nd International specialized exhibition of office furniture, management and infrastructure.

This year the participants presented a record number of new developments that is why the exposition occupied an additional pavilion. Having observed the stands of Russian manufacturers, all were unanimous in thinking that production technologies and design solutions complied with and could easily compete with foreign samples. This fact became a keynote idea for the addressing speeches at the official opening ceremony. So Mr. Alexander Dianov, the representative of the Ministry of Economical Development, stated, “The period of 2004-2005 will become the next milestone in promoting of native furniture manufacturers to the foreign market”. What I saw at the stands impressed me. Keep it steady! The exhibition brings fresh ideas to get you to the international arena”. His opinion was shared by other ceremony participants-the representatives of the Moscow Government, sectorial unions and associations.

Furniture exposition occupied 4 halls of the Exhibition Centre (3, 4, 4.1 and 4.2) with total area 11 000 sq.m. Over 420 companies from 16 countries of the world showcased their goods, housed in product-focused pavilions, representing separate market segment.

Artfurniture/Arfex-2004

This large-scale art-event brought together a total of 200 exhibitors, striving to accomplish one and the same idea – to highlight all “resources” of modern art, meant for creating comfortable ambient. The exhibition featured Art-Décor salon, Ethno-Art Festival of Arts and Crafts, the Body-Art Russian Championship, fashion-shows, focusing on ethnic collections, as well as seminars and work-shops, dedicated to modern trends and national styles in interior decoration. Art salon is being billed as having drawn everybody’s attention by works of present-day artists, sculptors and galleries, - in other words the salon offered an amazing variety of useful products so essential for interior designers and common customers.

A unique exposition of exclusive furniture, accessories and works of modern art, displayed in Halls 4.1 and 4.2, turned out to be an exhibition backbone. Its major part demonstrated the products of Russian companies, which support MVK Holding Company policy, targeted at native business maintenance and promotion.

So, MOON furniture factory, being one of the leaders at the upholstery furniture market, presented state-of-the-art sofas with transformation mechanism. As pointed out by factory designer Margarita Bobrova, “Such furniture hasn’t been viewed at the Moscow market before: among distinguished characteristics - elastic polyurethane foam mattress with a shimmering cover. Moreover, we fixed it to the ornamental open-work iron construction. ARTFURNITURE is the only exhibition where such bold projects can be easily realized.”

Exclusive upholstered furniture was also exhibited by other companies, namely AB Line, Allegro Classica, 8 Marta, Hanspert and others too many to mention. The latter company organized the presentation of a new turnable mechanism of the Gavana sofa, which makes the pillows automatically hide under the sofa when folding it out. “The pillows never touch the floor, they shouldn't be removed and placed near the sofa, as in other models. This is our own invention”, Dmitry Daar, the Director of the Regional Department of Hanspert Company explains.

The exhibition showed that nowadays, ethnic furniture enjoys great popularity among the Russian customers. ARFEX was flooded with national items of different companies. MAHARAJA’S INTERIORS salon brought Indian rarities: a two-century chair made of teak and camel bone, ancient swings, vases and columns. Unique teak furniture suite with gold-sprayed carving adorned the main stage and everyone passing couldn’t take his eyes away from such beauty. TABLES AND CHAIRS OF MALAYSIA Company demonstrated mahogany collections, created by Indonesian and Malay masters. Eastern style fanciers admired the sight of exclusive solid birch furniture from GORDARIKA Company.

Another fashion tendency was realized in archaized wooden furniture. The stand of ENIKOMTEC studio was modified into a bar counter, combined with the chain hung swing, which in spite its up-to-date construction, looked the same age as Indian rarities. Nikolay Kalugin, Technical Director, revealed a technology secret, “Some designers make timber old with the help of special substances and equipment. We achieve this effect manually, applying thermal treatment, then brushing and finally varnishing the wood. It is hand labour which gives such an amazing effect”.

A vast section belonged to decorations and handicraft by Russian masters. WORLD OF PICTURE FRAMES salon included the latest innovation − pictures uniting drawing and embroidery. “Our paintings are based on works of outstanding artists and modern authors, but in Russia picture embroidery is not so well-developed, that is why we have to adopt foreign experience”, Marina Severidova, Director General, comments.

Design Consulting Committee worked every day and the specialists were ready to assist the attendees in any question, concerning creative methods for interior decoration.

Kitexpo-2004

The completely successful course of the exhibition Kitexpo-2004 was marked by a wide choice of kitchens and their availability, especially it concerned Russian exposition. Actually the exhibition was being billed as providing an opportunity to choose furniture suite at any preferable price: the spectrum of products varied from MDF-unit, exposed by STOLPLIT Company − at a cost of $350) to elite kitchens, which, according to VIRS Company Commercial Director, “didn’t serve for cooking”.

What is meant here is MEDEYA kitchen unit. It drew attention of not only visitors but of exhibitors as well. “I didn’t expect such flight of fancy from VIRS. Their exposition impressed me greatly”, Oksana Sidyakova, representative of ECO-FURNITURE confessed. By the way, ECO-FURNITURE is one of the few Russian companies, dealing with the whole manufacturing process from timber sawing to design and furniture production. It offered kitchens of no less interest, made of Russian solid oak and birch.

As for suppliers, BVR FURNITURE is to be mentioned, as their assortment of exhibits could capture the interest of the owners of small-sized kitchens. Due to the compactness, kitchen units of joint Polish and Byelorussian origin could create a feeling of space even at 6 sq.m.

Component parts and table accessories were held up to view by MAGAMAX, whose advantage was steel fruit vases of brass colour pallete.

One of the key players at the consumable materials market, EUROHIM-1 announced two more innovative attractions for Russian customers: slabs with patented Aberflex cover, easily resisting a minute burning with a cigarette, and special varnish for making the effect of aging timber.

Kitexpo also saw a round table discussion “Development tendencies for kitchen furniture market” and seminar, entitled “FengShui for house. Kitchen Alchemy. Dinner Table Symbols”.

Ofexpo + Orgexpo-2004

The opening of the exhibition was heralded by the news on technology for furniture manufacturing out of natural veneer, introduced by 2 Russian office furniture manufacturers – FELIX and SKHODNENSKAYA FACTORY OF DOMESTIC FURNITURE. The Depatment Director of FELIX Company, Andrey Terentiev told us some words on the essence of technology, “Veneer – the thinnest saw cut − is shaped and put to MDF, then pressed and vacuumed to let glue deeply soak up, so the surface appears to be very smooth”. In specialists’ opinion, such furniture doesn’t loose colour and is characterized by high water- and heat proofing properties (even short time fire impact does not leave any traces).

Moreover, in Alexey Zimin, Sales Director, SKHODNENSKAYA FACTORY, “Russian furniture out of natural veneer is quite competitive − it is practically two times cheaper as compared with foreign samples”.

Suppliers, renowned for office furniture import, presented new inventions from different countries. For example, AMIGO Company attracted the visitors to the stand by an unusual office chair “SWOPPER” in a form of training device, and every willing person could merrily bounce up an down − as specialists state, it allows to relieve backache. The "swopper" has received many awards. It carries the German GS mark (which means it satisfies the German GSG product safety legislation) and can be used wherever people sit. Besides, the company was studying the demand for beechmocha-coloured furniture, being very popular in Europe.

Among other peculiar products there should be mentioned “the best world arm-chair”, exposed by DELTA INFORM. This sonorous title was awarded to the armchair of the Contessa brand at the World Furniture Exhibition NeoCon (Chicago) for unrivaled construction, material and design.

Ofexpo + Orgexpo-2004 also featured equipment for furniture manufacturing. GLOBAL EDGE offered the latest scientific achievement − high accuracy processing centers with JET computer management.

Feedback from the companies, participating in ARTFURNITURE-2004:

Margarita Bobrova, Designer,
MOON Furniture factory:

− We brought to the exhibition two novelties − sofas of ¹69 and ¹035 models. The latter one was given Grand Prix at Euroexpofurniture exhibition in May. Its main peculiarity is transformation mechanism “turnable sofa”. Such furniture hasn’t been viewed at the Moscow market before: among distinguished characteristics - elastic polyurethane foam mattress with a shimmering cover. Moreover, we fixed it to the ornamental open-work iron construction. ARTFURNITURE is the only exhibition where such bold projects can be easily realized.

We participated in Artfurniture last year – the exhibition has experienced some positive changes – the number of visitors has increased, the stand decoration quality has improved, the attitude to the visitors is different. Exhibitors perfectly understand that if the decision was once maid − they should do their best.

The exhibition profile appeals to me. Taking part in Euroexpofurniture, we had to limit our fantasy as the definite type of furniture was in need.

But there are lots of people who are interested in unusual furniture, and they will surely come here. It is so-called aesthetic pleasure for designers of industrial enterprises, which enables them to forget about demand and profit, and just create something new, something for the soul. Here new ideas are welcomed and tasted, and after the novelty is introduced, it excites great interest, which is evaluated by the top mangers, and at the final step it is displayed as a mass consumption model at Euroexpofurniture.

Dmitry Daar, Director Regional Department,
Hanspert Company:

− We represent Finnish furniture factory. New GAVANA sofa is a completely state-of-the-art invention, nobody has done it before. Pillows are fixed in a special way to a turnable mechanism. When folding out the sofa, the pillows “hide” under the very mechanism so that you have a spacious bed 160X200. The main advantage of the mechanism is that the pillows never touch the floor, they shouldn't be removed and placed near the sofa, as in other models. This is our own invention. The sofa attracts by its leather upholstery of some shabby effect, natural latex pillows filled with European pure white feather. The thing of this kind could be exhibited only at Artfurniture as here we are able to show everything in action, what is impossible to do in the catalogue. The matter is that the sofa is quite large, and none of the pictures can mirror all its advantages.

Artfurniture delights with cozy atmosphere, informal almost home atmosphere. Both exhibitors and visitors feel pleased here. We will participate in all furniture exhibitions, held by MVK Holding Company.

Yury Aistov, Director General, Ethno-art gallery;
Svetlana Ivanova, Designer-seller, Maharaja’s Interiors salon:

? Our salons offer a breathtaking array of different style furniture. Especially on Artfurniture occasion, we decided to present Indian culture, expressed not only through ethnic furniture, but also in forging, accessories and textile. All furniture is made of teak with forging brass elements – these are exclusive things. For example, this chair out of teak and camel bone, aged over 200, was bought at the auction in India. Ancient two-century swing, vases and columns were housed in Hall 4.2. Besides there were works displayed by phyto-designers.

The furniture suite at the podium looked glamorous with teak wood cutting decoration as if the artist touched the wood with golden paint brush so that it would have a surprising resemblance with brass.

This exhibition has recorded the highest-ever number of sales. Our products and ethnic furniture among them enjoyed great popularity with attendees, being real clients. We invited everybody to visit our stand, so we think to receive a long-term return.

Next year you we will see us again at the exhibition, but we are, most likely, to choose another style. It would be interesting to work in High-Tech.

Andrey Salamatov,
Manager, Tables and Chairs of Malaysia Company:

− We are specialized in direct furniture delivery from Indonesia and Malaysia. We offered to view a mahogany collection of hand made furniture. We pursued the objectives to show quality and beauty of our products and attract new customers. I personally think that the aims were achieved and the exhibition had a success. Our stand drew much attention so participation will give sizable profit.

I liked the exposition with an amazing amount of unusual things most of all. It is clearly seen that the exhibition is making steps toward art and design, what is quite perspective nowadays. The visitors come here like to the museum.

Nikolay Kalugin,
Technical Director, Enikomtech Company:

? Furniture with ageing effect is highly rated by the customers. This quite a booming trend – like everything old is new again – originated from Italy. Some designers make timber old with the help of special substances and equipment. We achieve this effect manually, applying thermal treatment, then brushing and finally varnishing the wood. It is hand labour, which gives such an amazing effect.

Actually, we come to a decision to demonstrate our creative works at Artfurniture for the 1st time. Earlier we were specialized in smaller forms and showcased them at other exhibitions in Sokolniki Centre. Participation in this project is a kind of debut for us. Usually I don’t expect lots of orders from the exhibition but this time we were lucky. We presented a really unique thing – a bar counter, combined with swings − everything made of old solid wood. We didn’t have any competitors, so the heightened interest was quite evident. I was pleasantly surprised!

Feedback from the companies, participating in KITEXPO-2004:

Irina Maximenko, Director of Sales Department,
Magamax Company:

− Our company has its own retail price policy, but the exhibitions we participate in (I mean Euroexpofurniture, Artfurniture and Kitexpo), serve as a worthwhile tool for searching of dealers. Here we also were targeted at wholesalers so Kitexpo met our expectations.

Our new products - metallic table accessories - aroused a great deal of interest. They have a wonderful color palette distinct from the wares, presented at the market. Together with chrome accessories, we offered yellow metal and ancient brass collours. The exhibition attracted potential and constant customers to our novelties.

We have many clients, who got familiar with earlier produced goods, nevertheless, we have managed to find new clients as well, who were not aware of our company’s activity.

We can follow Kitexpo development: in 2004 the number of attendees and exhibitors has increased − the project experiences steady growth. The organizational level is at the top. We would like more manufactures and suppliers to display accessories. You see, there are not so many competitors at the exhibition, what, on the one hand, is positive − we are practically the only “attraction” for visitors, but, on the second hand, we are not able to follow the market tendencies.

Oksana Sidyakova, Sales Manager,
Eco-Furniture Company:

− The main difference of our exposition is that we are firm in the decision not to use MDF - only natural timber. Kitchens, tables and chairs are made of oak, birch or other types of wood without veneer. All materials are delivered from Kostroma and Tver regions.

As far as exhibition results are concerned, they appeared to be more than effective: we acquired many new partners and orders. It was pleasant to see our stand full of people especially on the 2nd and 3rd exhibition days.

Eco-furniture representatives were constant participants of all the events, and press conferences in particular. The program of events and the exhibition itself were excellent. We also kept an eye on our competitors. I didn’t expect such flight of fancy from VIRS. Their exposition impressed me greatly.

We are glad to have taken part in the exhibition, we will participate in future by all means.

Elena Dymova, Deputy Director General, Euro-Chem-1 Trade House;
Natalia Smolina, Director of Advertising and PR Department, Euro-Chem-1 Trade House:

− The main aim of our participation was to introduce 3 new commodity groups: “Technoinex” dish dryers, “Prestige” panels and Poly-Vinyl-Chloride film varnish with “old wood” effect. All these products are novelties at the Russian market.

Dish dryers have special telescopic fasteners, which enable even laymen to mount them into different constructions.

“Prestige” panels with natural veneer are not varnished, as majority of the leading specialists do. The panels are covered with “Aberflex” patented layer, which differs by its durability.

And at last, we decided to test quite specific varnish for Poly-Vinyl-Chloride film, which makes natural wood look old. This modern tendency is experiencing a real boom in Europe, so Russia begins to hear its echo. The most advanced furniture manufacturers are already implementing this novelty in practice, but still they apply imported materials of higher cost and more time needed.

The exhibition has recorded its highest-ever visitor figures. Not only designers were interested to buy our goods, but kitchen manufacturers as well.

We have managed to achieve all goals. Our exposition enjoyed popularity so we expect new clients to come. We were informed that the demand had increased.

Enormous thanks to the organizers!

Sergey Sproge, Commercial Director,
VIRS company

− Everybody was surprised with our booth. Visitors took Medea kitchen for something new and exclusive. As a matter of fact, it is just a fresh impression of ordinary things. We have been producing this furniture series for over 5 years. It combines all its parts in harmony.

I believe everybody notices an enormous amount of guests at our booth. There are so many clients and customers! We see a significant commercial effect of our participation. I think one of the reasons of our success rests on prompt response to new European trends. A mix of grey and brown colors is extremely popular now. Another fashionable trend is a system of door opening with a pull-back springs buttonhole. We are aware that it is a next day’s fashion in Russia, that is why we exhibit in Kitexpo-2004 a furniture set, combining all these new features.

By the way, speaking about a pull-back springs buttonhole. The last exhibition in Milan shows that manufacturers have decided to follow this tendency, excluding front hardware from furniture sets. But such kitchen requires constant cleaning due to fingerprints on the surfaces. When this question was made on the press conference of Milan exhibition, there followed a shocking answer from manufacturers, that these kitchens were not destined for cooking. Our furniture set Medea is also an image product. It is a pleasure to have a cup of coffee in the morning in this type of kitchens.

We pay much attention to the exposition preparation. Many people underestimate exhibitions in terms of promotion effect. Despite such opinions, we are sure about the success of professionally organized exhibition. So we are doing our best here.

We will participate in the next Kitexpo and Euroexpofurniture by all means.

Irina Polyakova, Sales Manager,
BRV Mebel:

− We are representing Polish & Byelorussian company in a free economic area in Brest. This year we use new decor and colors in kitchens. At Kitexpo we plan to present our products to wholesale companies and find new customers. New samples attract a heightened interest, proving the positive results of our participation. Actually, we are surprised with such success. Possibly it is for that reason, that the majority of Moscow and region apartments generally have small-sized kitchens. These are our target clients. Visitors show interest in dining section as well and we have already discussed the supplies with some of the clients.

Participation in exhibitions is our pleasure, for they give us a chance to display the latest products. If by autumn 2005 our designers create another unusual projects, it means that at next Kitexpo we’ll present new models.

We are regular participants in Sokolniki, so we can say that the exhibitions are getting better. We always bring something new to each exhibition. So do all other exhibitors, making exposition more and more interesting.
